This type of targeted attack (on leadership positions) is extremely effective. Access to a regular user account (yours) quite often means compromising everything, because you necessarily need to have access "everywhere".
Yet the solution is quite simple?
- You really don't need access everywhere. Always work under a regular non-privileged account (not administrator)
- If you really need to have access to "everything", then get a special admin account that you won't use for regular work, with a strong password, secured by multifactoring, and store it somewhere safe. More on password storage some other time.
Every day you can do something small to improve IT security. It doesn't even have to hurt much and it certainly won't cost you anything.
