Most companies think or rather hope that they have their backups absolutely in order. The surprise comes when they need to restore data from backups. This is where regular testing of restores + using the 3-2-1 rule will help.
So how to do it?
For example, WORM (write one read many) tapes can be used or Amazon S3 can immutability as a filesystem property. There are several solutions. It depends on your requirements, budget.
