At first glance, it seems like a great idea. How about bending SharePoint to store backups?
It's doable, but it's hard work. It's like riding in a limo off-road or running in sneakers on pavement.
Real-life stories:
Sitting in a meeting with 3 client managers/women and solving:
- Audit told us to store accounting backups offsite = offsite backup.
- Well somehow we've already post-solved it ourselves, but it works so halfway ... We store the backups on SharePoint, but the OneDrive client sometimes freezes up.
Requirement:
- So we need you to do the same thing, but 100% functional, ideally using something = SharePoint that we already pay for, to make it free. Our time probably doesn't count towards the cost, AMEN.
Our answer:
- We've grown out of it. It doesn't make sense to invent and burn time with something that's already invented.
- We will use Azure Backup, it will cost about 30 EUR/month and 2-3 hours of work.
This meeting alone has eaten up almost 6 hours of the client managers' time, not exactly cheap.
Crazy, but pretty frequent.
Improve, innovate, improve. Just don't overdo it with the IT bending. And if you're on the other side as an IT contractor, don't get talked into crazy things
